Real-time Tracking holds the focus on tracked subjects
When you're tracking a fast-moving subject, the camera's motion tracker uses an enhanced subject recognition algorithm (AI) that draws on color, pattern (brightness), distance (depth) and face/eye information to recognize, and maintain focus on, your subject. (1) Face [AI] (2) Eye [AI] (3) Color (4) Pattern (5) Distance (6) Subject recognition algorithm
Enhanced Real-time Eye AF supports portrait shooting
Real-time Eye AF detects and automatically focuses on the eyes of your subject when you half-press the shutter, and you can even prioritize your subject's left or right eye. When AF-C is set, it maintains a stable focus even when the face is partially hidden or backlit, or the subject is facing downward.
Real-time Eye AF for animal
The technology used in Real-time Eye AF has been adapted to support animalas well as human. When activated, this provides fast automatic detection and tracking of animals' eyes, with precise focus that had been difficult to achieve otherwise, all to give you great pet portraits and wildlife shots.
High speed continuous shooting with AF/AE tracking
Capture all the action with continuous shooting at up to 11 fps. Even when using silent shutter, or the live-view mode, up to 8 fps is possible. Display lag has been minimized, and up to 116 JPEG (Standard) images can be shot in each burst, with group display available in the playback mode.
Accurate autofocus in dim lighting
Highly accurate autofocus is possible even in dark settings, thanks to the camera's advanced AF algorithm. High AF sensitivity means reliable AF-S auto-focus all the way down to EV -2.
Focus Magnifier for finer focus adjustment in both MF/AF modes
When extra-accurate focus is called for, such as when you're taking macro shots, you can display a magnified view of the general area you want to focus on, then finely adjust the exact point of focus using the touchscreen or the focus point selector.
Easy manual focus with a clearly visible peaking function
The camera's peaking function color-highlights the most sharply focused section of the entire image area when you're using manual focus. Now blue has been added to the display's other peaking colors (red, yellow and white) to improve the visibility of in-focus areas when you're doing the delicate focusing required for macro or portrait shooting.
Built-in 5-axis optical image stabilization
The 5-axis in-body optical image stabilization mechanism used on our acclaimed full-frame cameras has been adapted for use as a stabilization unit for the APS-C sensor on this model. This system compensates for camera shake along five different axes – pitch and yaw, horizontal and vertical, and rotational (roll) – to ensure steadier still images and movies during hand-held shooting. A highly accurate gyro sensor provides an image stabilization effect equivalent to a shutter speed 5 steps faster. The feature allows you to zoom in on far-off subjects, snap detailed close-ups, capture night scenes, and more ― all with minimal blur from camera shake.
An innovative image-processing system
The camera's APS-C size, 24.2-megapixel Exmor™ CMOS sensor provides a wide sensitivity range and excellent low-noise performance. In conjunction with the latest-generation BIONZ X™ image processing engine, it delivers beautiful, high-resolution images with superb image clarity and texture reproduction.
Extraordinary image quality, low noise and a wide ISO range
The standard ISO sensitivity range has been extended to ISO 100–32000 (expandable ISO 50–102400 for stills). Improved imaging algorithms, detail reproduction technology and area-division noise reduction result in more realistic textures, better detail in shadow regions, and more lifelike colors, including human skin tones and natural plant colors.
14-bit RAW output with rich tonal gradation
True 14-bit RAW images are delivered via a high-performance LSI and the BIONZ X image processor. To retain the smoothest, most natural tonal gradations, all processing occurs at 16-bit, preventing any dithering or processing errors from being introduced into the final 14-bit RAW image output. 4K movie recording in high-bit-rate XAVC S format
Super 35-mm format, 4K movie recording with full pixel readout and no pixel binning allows oversampling of around 2.4x the image information needed for 4K (QFHD: 3840 x 2160). By downscaling from the equivalent of 6K resolution, captured videos benefit from even more realism and depth. The high-bit-rate (up to 100 Mbps for 4K 30p/24p) XAVC S video codec ensures professional quality images in a consumer-friendly format.
Precise AF tracking with Real-time Eye AF, for better movies
Fast Hybrid AF brings high speed, accuracy and tracking performance to meet the stringent autofocus demands of 4K movies. AF tracking sensitivity can be adjusted for either stable focus or responsive refocusing, depending on the nature of the scene, and Touch Tracking lets you initiate tracking of a moving subject simply by touching the LCD screen. Real-time Eye AF is now also available for movies.
S-Gamut/S-Log shooting
S-Log shooting gives you the flexibility to make more expressive movies by performing color grading in post-production. The S-Log3 and S-Log2 gamma curves feature a wide dynamic range (up to 1,300% larger than Rec. 709) that can help minimize blown highlights and crushed shadows. The S-Log3 gamma setting also provides an impressive 14 stops of dynamic range.
Creative movie-making options
Interval Shooting with a set interval between 1 and 60 seconds can be performed within the camera and used to create a time-lapse movie on a PC. You can also view the images using a simple variable-speed preview function directly on the camera. Slow motion (up to 5x) and quick motion (up to 60x) can also be recorded directly on the camera with no post-processing required. Also, high-quality slow-motion movies can be created in post-production using high-speed Full HD recording at up to 120 fps.
External mic and audio input plus headphone jack
External microphones can be attached via the microphone jack, or use line input via XLR connectors with the separately available XLR adaptor kit.
