The new, extremely versatile Alpha A6600 camera has been designed to address the needs of the most demanding photographers and videographers. The new Alpha A6600 includes a 24.2MP Exmor™ CMOS image sensor, the latest BIONZ X™ image processor, and a front-end LSI implemented in Sony's full-frame cameras. This powerful trio combine to deliver all-around enhancements in image quality and performance across all areas of photo and video capture.

The Alpha A6600 offers a lightning-fast autofocus acquisition time of 0.02 seconds. With 425 focal-plane phase-detection autofocus (AF) points covering approximately 84 percent of the image area and 425 contrast-detection AF points, the high density and wide coverage of the AF system ensure reliable AF, even in the most challenging light conditions. The AA6600 benefits from Sony's 'Real-time Tracking' which utilizes Sony's latest algorithm with Artificial Intelligence-based object recognition to ensure that subjects can be captured with excellent accuracy, even via the touch panel on the rear screen. In addition, the new model offerf 'Real-time Eye AF', the latest version of Sony's acclaimed Eye AF technology. Real-time Eye AF employs AI-based object recognition to detect and process eye data in real time, resulting in improved accuracy, speed and tracking performance of Eye AF for both humans and animals, and it allows the photographer to concentrate exclusively on composition.

The Alpha A6600 also offers Real Time Eye AF in video. When activated, the eye of a subject is automatically tracked with high precision and reliability, allowing the shooter to focus on the content itself as opposed to what is in focus or not.

A full-fledged toolkit for your imagination

The αA6600 packs in the features, to deliver what you need for just about any situation you encounter – fast AF, steady image stabilization and stunning image quality, a high-capacity battery and serious 4K HDR (HLG) movie shooting.

Unparalleled AF performance, the key to beautiful shots

Fast and accurate autofocus captures fleeting moments in stunning detail, thanks to a combination of innovative Sony technologies. A total of 425 phase-detection AF points work in conjunction with contrast-detection AF to achieve a remarkable 0.02-s speed, while High-density AF Tracking Technology follows even erratically moving subjects. Real-time Tracking holds the focus on tracked subjects

When you're tracking a fast-moving subject, the camera's motion tracker uses an enhanced subject recognition algorithm (AI) that draws on color, pattern (brightness), distance (depth) and face/eye information to recognize, and maintain focus on, your subject. (1) Face [AI] (2) Eye [AI] (3) Color (4) Pattern (5) Distance (6) Subject recognition algorithm

Enhanced Real-time Eye AF supports portrait shooting

Real-time Eye AF detects and automatically focuses on the eyes of your subject when you half-press the shutter, and you can even prioritize your subject's left or right eye. When AF-C is set, it maintains a stable focus even when the face is partially hidden or backlit, or the subject is facing downward.

Real-time Eye AF for animal

The technology used in Real-time Eye AF has been adapted to support animalas well as human. When activated, this provides fast automatic detection and tracking of animals' eyes, with precise focus that had been difficult to achieve otherwise, all to give you great pet portraits and wildlife shots.

High speed continuous shooting with AF/AE tracking

Capture all the action with continuous shooting at up to 11 fps. Even when using silent shutter, or the live-view mode, up to 8 fps is possible. Display lag has been minimized, and up to 116 JPEG (Standard) images can be shot in each burst, with group display available in the playback mode.

Accurate autofocus in dim lighting

Highly accurate autofocus is possible even in dark settings, thanks to the camera's advanced AF algorithm. High AF sensitivity means reliable AF-S auto-focus all the way down to EV -2.

Focus Magnifier for finer focus adjustment in both MF/AF modes

When extra-accurate focus is called for, such as when you're taking macro shots, you can display a magnified view of the general area you want to focus on, then finely adjust the exact point of focus using the touchscreen or the focus point selector.

Easy manual focus with a clearly visible peaking function

The camera's peaking function color-highlights the most sharply focused section of the entire image area when you're using manual focus. Now blue has been added to the display's other peaking colors (red, yellow and white) to improve the visibility of in-focus areas when you're doing the delicate focusing required for macro or portrait shooting.

Built-in 5-axis optical image stabilization

The 5-axis in-body optical image stabilization mechanism used on our acclaimed full-frame cameras has been adapted for use as a stabilization unit for the APS-C sensor on this model. This system compensates for camera shake along five different axes – pitch and yaw, horizontal and vertical, and rotational (roll) – to ensure steadier still images and movies during hand-held shooting. A highly accurate gyro sensor provides an image stabilization effect equivalent to a shutter speed 5 steps faster. The feature allows you to zoom in on far-off subjects, snap detailed close-ups, capture night scenes, and more ― all with minimal blur from camera shake.

An innovative image-processing system

The camera's APS-C size, 24.2-megapixel Exmor™ CMOS sensor provides a wide sensitivity range and excellent low-noise performance. In conjunction with the latest-generation BIONZ X™ image processing engine, it delivers beautiful, high-resolution images with superb image clarity and texture reproduction.

Extraordinary image quality, low noise and a wide ISO range

The standard ISO sensitivity range has been extended to ISO 100–32000 (expandable ISO 50–102400 for stills). Improved imaging algorithms, detail reproduction technology and area-division noise reduction result in more realistic textures, better detail in shadow regions, and more lifelike colors, including human skin tones and natural plant colors.

14-bit RAW output with rich tonal gradation

True 14-bit RAW images are delivered via a high-performance LSI and the BIONZ X image processor. To retain the smoothest, most natural tonal gradations, all processing occurs at 16-bit, preventing any dithering or processing errors from being introduced into the final 14-bit RAW image output. [1] Image sensor [2] The latest high-speed front-end LSI [a] 16-bit image processing

4K movie recording in high-bit-rate XAVC S format

Super 35-mm format, 4K movie recording with full pixel readout and no pixel binning allows oversampling of around 2.4x the image information needed for 4K (QFHD: 3840 x 2160). By downscaling from the equivalent of 6K resolution, captured videos benefit from even more realism and depth. The high-bit-rate (up to 100 Mbps for 4K 30p/24p) XAVC S video codec ensures professional quality images in a consumer-friendly format.

Precise AF tracking with Real-time Eye AF, for better movies

Fast Hybrid AF brings high speed, accuracy and tracking performance to meet the stringent autofocus demands of 4K movies. AF tracking sensitivity can be adjusted for either stable focus or responsive refocusing, depending on the nature of the scene, and Touch Tracking lets you initiate tracking of a moving subject simply by touching the LCD screen. Real-time Eye AF is now also available for movies.

S-Gamut/S-Log shooting

S-Log shooting gives you the flexibility to make more expressive movies by performing color grading in post-production. The S-Log3 and S-Log2 gamma curves feature a wide dynamic range (up to 1,300% larger than Rec. 709) that can help minimize blown highlights and crushed shadows. The S-Log3 gamma setting also provides an impressive 14 stops of dynamic range.

Creative movie-making options

Interval Shooting with a set interval between 1 and 60 seconds can be performed within the camera and used to create a time-lapse movie on a PC. You can also view the images using a simple variable-speed preview function directly on the camera. Slow motion (up to 5x) and quick motion (up to 60x) can also be recorded directly on the camera with no post-processing required. Also, high-quality slow-motion movies can be created in post-production using high-speed Full HD recording at up to 120 fps.

External mic and audio input plus headphone jack

External microphones can be attached via the microphone jack, or use line input via XLR connectors with the separately available XLR adaptor kit. This enables connection with various high-end microphones for professional-level audio. In addition, a headphone jack is available so you can monitor the audio on movies as you record them.

Sophisticated features for easier movie-making

The αA6600 is ready for professional videography workflows, with clean HDMI output and REC control, timecode (TC/UB), variable framerates, and proxy recording. In addition, a range of functions are included to enhance movie recording accuracy, such as the display of overlay markers or gridlines, zebra exposure metering, or ISO values when shooting with ISO Auto.

High-capacity Z battery for long-duration shooting

To support longer shooting sessions, the αA6600 uses the NP-FZ100 high-capacity battery previously introduced with many of our full-frame cameras, while retaining almost the same frontal-view dimensions as previous 6000-series models. Not only does it feature a total capacity around 2.2 times that of our standard battery, it also helps improve the grip ergonomics. The optional Multi Battery Adaptor Kit can accommodate up to four NP-FZ100 batteries for worry-free long-duration movie shooting.

Sturdy, durable construction for robust operation

The camera's low-vibration shutter mechanism is designed and tested to withstand around 200,000 shutter cycles27, and the body, top cover, front cover, internal frame, and rear cover use a lightweight but highly rigid magnesium alloy. Major buttons and dials are sealed, and casing components have an interlocked double-layer structure to minimize dust and moisture.

Improved ergonomic grip

The thickness of the grip of the αA6600 has been increased by 0.26" (compared to the previous model), and the area has been increased by 15%, to make it easier to grasp and hold. The construction material has also been upgraded for a more rigid feel, and the release button attachment angle has been altered for easier operation.

Custom functions for greater operability

Compared to the previous model, the camera has one additional Custom button (C button), bringing the total to four. Now 11 buttons (increased from ten) can be custom-assigned to any of 91 shooting or replay functions. Frequently used functions can also be assigned to the control dial and control wheel with My Dial. My Menu allows flexible assignment of 30 menu items, and the custom settings screen helps keep track of everything. Helpful guides for menu items are also available with a single button press on the menu screen.

Prioritized display of AF area and ISO display limit

On the AF area-setting screen, a new feature enables display of only the focus area types that you use frequently. Another new feature on the ISO setting screen displays only frequently used ISO ranges. This allows for more efficient settings adjustment while shooting. These features can also be used when "Switch Focus Area" is assigned to a Custom button.

Greater control over white balance settings

If set in advance, auto white balance can now be locked or unlocked at any time, for more consistent color tones when there are multiple light sources. Custom setting of white balance has been simplified, and you can now select an AWB priority setting when shooting with incandescent lighting – either warmer Atmosphere Priority, or White Priority for purer whites.

Easier ratings and protection from deletion

In playback mode, still images can be given a rating or protected from deletion. Both these functions can be accessed via pre-assigned custom keys.

Versatile flash functions

When shooting with compatible wireless flash units, rear-curtain sync and slow sync can be selected, increasing your creative options for lighting.

1:1 aspect ratio ideal for social-media shots

In addition to 3:2 and 16:9 aspect (width-to-height) ratios, you can also select a 1:1 aspect ratio – ideal for sharing images on social media platforms. This means that you no longer need to hand-trim your images after shooting to prepare to post them on social media.

Smooth display on the OLED viewfinder

The high-contrast, high-resolution XGA OLED Tru-Finder™ provides high visibility, fine details even in dark areas, accurate colors and smooth motion, with display framerate options of either 60 fps or 120 fps. Standard and high-quality settings are available for both the viewfinder and the LCD monitor.
