The new OM System OM-5 is a 20-Megapixel Micro Four-Thirds mirrorless camera designed for both stills and video. Built around the design of the previous OM-D E-M5 Mark III, the new camera has been upgraded to include computational photography features previously reserved for more expensive cameras.
121 Point Phase Detection AF System
The autofocus system in the OM-5 features 121 phase-detection AF points as well as 121 contrast-detection AF points. The 121 phase-detection points are cross-type which improvs focusing in lower light conditions. The OM-5 also features four custom target settings. Both Eye and Face Detection have been improved and for astrophotographers a Starry Sky focus mode has been included. This allows for precise focu enabling precise focusing, even in the darkest hours of the night.
Live ND
Live ND allows the camera to achieve slow shutter speed effects in bright light which is usually only possible with the use of an ND filter. The effects, which go as high as ND16, can be viewed before capturing the photo using the viewfinder or on the LCD monitor when LV Simulation is activated.
Pro Capture Captures Previous Frames
Pro Capture begins recording once the shutter button is pressed halfway and records previous frames beginning with the moment when the shutter button is pressed fully. When shooting at the maximum 30 frames per second (AF/AE locked), up to 14 previous frames can be captured.
Internal Focus Stacking
The OM-5's internal Focus Stacking feature captures eight shots at different focal positions and automatically generates a single image from them, a technique that is often employed in macro shooting.
Computational Photography Gone Wild
Other computational photography features include Live Composite, Live Bulb, Interval Shooting/Time Lapse Movie, Focus Bracketing, HDR, Color Creator, Art Filter, and Fisheye Compensation.
4K/30p and 1080/120p Video Capture
On the video side, it still shoots 4K 30p video as before, but can now handle super-slow-mo 1080p at 120 fps. The camera also adds the OM-Log400 Profile for improved dynamic range. Also new is the lack of a 30 minute recording limit, so you can now shoot video for as long as your card or battery will hold out.
Sealed Against Dust and Water
The durable OM-5 has been sealed against dust and water ingress to IP53 standards, and can operate in temperatures as low as 14 °F (-10 °C).
OLED Viewfinder & 3" Vari-Angle LCD
Framing up is undertaken via the 2.36-million-dot OLED viewfinder or 3-inch, 1.04-million-dot vari-angle rear monitor.
Native USB webcam support
The OM-5 features native USB webcam compatibility. Plug in a microUSB cable, select Webcam in the USB prompt, turn the mode dial to video, and you have a universally-compatible UVC/UAC webcam in this camera. No additional app or weird drivers are required to accomplish this. Simple as that!
BLS-50 Battery
The compact OM-5 uses the 8.46Wh BLS-50 battery. The battery is rated to around 310 shots using the CIPA standardized test method.
