A new stabilization algorithm provides precise detection and control right down to the single-pixel level, taking full advantage of the sensor's 61.0 megapixel2 resolution to bring out the finest subject details.

Faster, more precise wide-area AF even in low light

The processing power of the new BIONZ XR engine and updated algorithms achieve notably improved AF performance. Up to 693 phase-detection points12 in a high-density array cover approximately 79% of the image area. The latest AF algorithms enable high AF precision down to light levels as low as EV -4.0 in AF-S mode13. The α7R V also includes a Focus Priority mode for more reliable AF in low light or when using smaller apertures.

Focus bracketing with up to 299 sequentially shifted focus points

The camera will automatically shoot up to 299 images with sequentially shifted focus points, with custom intervals and sequence specified by the user. Pick the perfect shot, or post-process multiple shots to achieve creative composites with impossible focus depth.

Continuously shoot up to 583 compressed RAW images at 10 fps

Continuous shooting at up to 10 fps14 with full AF/AE tracking is possible with the mechanical or electronic shutter. The camera can shoot up to 583 compressed RAW images at this speed.

Full-pixel readout for 8K movies with incredible resolution

The XAVC HS format enables in-camera recording of high-resolution 8K 24p (25p)4 movies with efficient HEVC/H.265 compression, bringing out the very best in Sony's lenses and taking full advantage of the potential resolution provided by the sensor and full-pixel readout.

Precise, versatile external flash control

When a compatible Sony external flash unit15 is used with the camera's auto white balance function, the white balance is adjusted to produce natural skin tones on faces based on the balance between the flash output and ambient light. TTL flash control is applied up to 10 fps continuous shooting so that stable illumination and consistent exposure are achieved for each frame, even when tracking fast-moving subjects in scenes where the light changes dramatically or the angle of view is changed.

Expressive S-Cinetone™ S-Log3, HLG and 10 Creative Look presets in-camera

Based on the technology of CineAlta™ cameras such as the acclaimed VENICE, S-Cinetone delivers natural mid-tones that are essential to healthy-looking skin tones, plus soft colors and gorgeous highlights.

Effective heat dissipation for extended recording times

Heat generated by the image sensor, image processor, and AI processing unit is effectively dissipated to prevent overheating. One element of this is the graphite material formed into a unique Σ (sigma) shape and built into the image stabilization unit. This allows the image sensor, a major source of heat, to move freely during stabilization while effectively conducting heat away, achieving better heat dissipation. 8K 24p (25p) 10-bit 4:2:0 video can be recorded continuously for approximately 30 minutes28.

High reliability in challenging working environments

For more robust outdoor use, sealing is provided at all body seams, buttons and the battery compartment cover. A carefully designed lens lock button and cushioning around the mount also help resist dust and moisture29.

New anti-dust system increases dust removal efficiency

An ultrasonic actuator causes the filter in front of the image sensor to oscillate at more than 70,000 cycles per second, effectively removing dust and particles from the filter surface. There is also a Shutter When Power Off function that closes the shutter for lens changes.

Durable magnesium alloy chassis, reliable mechanical shutter

A lightweight, high-rigidity magnesium alloy is used for the top cover, front cover, internal frame, and rear cover, with durable construction that keeps the camera operating smoothly in hard-working environments. A shutter unit with a fast-response motor minimizes mechanical shutter vibration that can cause blur, while allowing high-speed continuous shooting at up to 10 fps. The shutter is quiet and has been tested for durability in excess of 500, 000 shutter cycles.

USB PD (Power Delivery) supports fast charging

The α7R V supports USB PD (Power Delivery), allowing higher power to be supplied from an external source. A USB charger or mobile battery that supports USB PD can be connected to the camera's USB Type-C® port, supplying power or charging the internal battery at three to four times the rate of the previous model.

Recycled materials

Sony is working towards the use of non-plastic packaging materials, with plant-based non-woven fabrics as well as recyclable materials. As for the camera itself, no non-recyclable resources are used in our SORPLAS™ material30, which is repeatedly recyclable, durable, and high in quality. Recyclable plastics are also used as much as possible30, reducing stress on the environment without compromising performance or functionality in any way.
