The Expanded Guides are much more than just camera and software manuals. Written by experts and with real-life examples, they are jargon-free and full-color. They also include a quick reference wallet card (pictured), and "Photographer's Grey" colored endpapers for metering.

With such a comprehensive - yet accessible - approach, both amateur and professional photographers alike can release the massive potential of their systems, with superior results.

Nikon's D3100 is the latest entry-level DX-format digital SLR camera, and its first that can record full 1080p HD videos. Intended for those advancing from a compact digital camera, this successor to the D3000 contains a 14.2 CMOS sensor and a 3in LCD screen. This models includes Live View shooting, a wider ISO range (100–3200 expandable to 12800) for shooting in low light and with scenes of rapidly moving subjects, and numerous other revisions. It comes packaged with the 18–55mm VR lens kit. Live View allows framing of images in the monitor and the D-Movie function supports high-definition movie recording. In-camera movie editing is possible.

Guide mode displays instructions for the most basic operations for shooting, image playback and editing and the application of camera settings, in the camera monitor. Assist images show the effect of various settings for an preview of the results expected, eg when 'Soften backgrounds' is selected and an aperture value specified, the assist image displayed in the monitor shows the effect that setting will have on image. With the Scene auto selector function, the camera analyzes the scene and selects the appropriate mode from Portrait, Landscape, Close up or Night portrait.
